Fall is all but gone, of course.

Fall is to me when I put the top down on my convertible, and the coming of the winter is when I get back to the car I only have to deal with a leaf, not a score of them.

A hippo in my office

Even though I do practically no outpatient work whatsoever, I still do have an office space. Now that our group goes to another facility, and myself being the new medical director there, I yet have another office there.

I buy these little "objects" and clutter my office with these, so that I can practice shooting when I am on call at the hospital. This is what I do between life and death. Go figure.

Already trying to get ahead - this little

This was the break she was looking for.

This particular footage was aired on a local cable show on Christmas eve, and this Hollywood movie director frantically placed a call at the cable station, the moment he saw my daughter sarcastically smiling into the camera, saying that she was the girl he was looking for for his next blockbuster movie.

The movie is based on the oldest novel known in existence; A tale of Genji. The cast will include Oscar winning actors, a great deal of computer generated motion graphics so advanced that the total production time is thought to be cut in less than half of the conventional method. Because of contractual obligation I cannot disclose not a whole lot more, but this is going to be big. Or so they tell me. They tell me that my little girl is going to be a star.

This is the side that patients and their don't get to see - the back side. Over to the far right is the children's hospital. The round tower attached to the building houses patients of various origin, young and old. A chopper can land on top that the tower also. A short, flat, two story building situated directly in front that is the basic science building. This is where they "play" with animals. There is of course the other side of the compounds that you cannot see. It is a medium size university hospital. We serve the area of probably about 10 million people, 800 adult bes, 400 children's beds, every possible subspecialty represented.

Many people choose to shoot with Pentax camera simply because of the FA ltds line up of lenses. There are three of them; 31, 43, and 77 mm. Some people swear by them, some get hard ons talking about them, and and if you bad mouth'ed them at Pentax Forum you will be dutifully crucified many times over.

I can see how people can get excited about these. This 31/1.8 in particular, along with the 77, is probably the best lens Pentax has ever produced.

Blah-blah-blah.

A new copy of this goes for close to $1,000. Hm . . . . .

Evolutionary advantage

I wonder what evolutionary advantage there was for us human to retain color vision, rather than, say, night vision. Then what percentage of eye owning creatures see in colors? I have no idea. Eyes often come to rest on flowers a lot. Pretty colors of flowers were of evolutionary advantage too? Highly doubtful. Uglier the flowers, the more left alone they would be, therefore improved survival. No?? Maybe Darwin was full of shit.

What's wrong with my left hand?

It almost sounds discriminatory of left handed people. There are some normal and nice left handed people out there and I know it. Let's end this nonsense once for all. Let us remember the year of 2010 as the year we overcame shameful ignorance of not accepting left handers into the mainstream.

Something for Christmas?

Not for me, but maybe it for you.

If I had a dog, there will be many terrible doggy pictures here . . . . That is not a good reason to have a dog anyway. I already have had three dogs in my life. Enough.

Worst HDR photo ever

Yes, I have been shooting of late. Plenty of crap, one after another. Here is my lame attempt, and as well as a grand entry into the world of HDR, which I consider to be the horse shit of photography, but in minds of certain photographers a revolution. One thing for sure is that it is so ecstatically easy to burn one terrible picture after another with this technique, as you can see up here.

What the hell is HDR anyway? Here is my understanding - it is a computer software rendition of multiple pictures taken at a wide range of apertures all combined into one. Very simple concept, really. What it does is that it "sort" of make the picture look a bit unrealistic in various degree of subtlety, depending on how much of HDR technique was employed. And this weirdness is such that, in order to get it, you have to be aware of what is not possible with the regular technique of taking a photo.

Weird.

Here in Southern California for the last week or so it has been uncharacteristically cold of late, with temperature dipping into high 30's F at night. Saving a life

This is called a Berlin Heart. This is an assist device, works just like a pump, that helps a failing heart. It sits outside of the body, drains blood out of the heart, and pumps it right back into the body, to augment cardiac output. What is on the bottom is the pneumatic device that drives it. This little thing saved a life of a 6 year old boy this past week. We put this kid on this pump, just in the nick of time. He made it, as he got a new heart (in a way of heart transplant) a couple of days ago. He is already sitting up on his bed, playing Nintendo.

A very good save it was.

It is purely a matter of preference, but I am finding out that I am quite fond of pictures that are so very well over exposed. Pentax digital cameras traditionally thought to under expose; so when I want an effect like that I really have to do it like I mean it.

Not a big fan of Christmas. It is nothing but a scam. I am not sure what the motivation behind writing a story like "Christmas Carol," but Dickens even came up with a name for people like myself who are not so fond of Christmas.
